Lorain Correctional Institution started operating in 1990 in the 111acre land built for the purpose. The security measures are as good as 262 extremely efficient security staffs guard the prison with their lives, which houses a total number of 1766 prisoners. Under the supervision of Warden Marc Houk and the superb administration of Director of ODRC Garry C. Mohar, the institution had not recorded a single escape in the whole year 2010.

Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correctional Lorain Correctional Institution opened inn 1990 and had maintained its good name with great efforts by all the 413 staff out of which 262 are in security planning and execution. Built and being operated in 111acres of land the institution’s inmate search results in 1766 strength, amongst which 980 are black inmates, 739 are whites, and the rest 47 people constitute of different groups.

Security Measurement

The security measurement in Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correctional Lorain Correctional Institution is extremely efficient. Warden Marc Houk and his team of 262 security staff had been working day and night to maintain the tight security in and out of the institution.

There are many levels of security measurement planning like level #1, level #2, level #3, level #4, and level #5. The security measurements are being ranked according to the level of the offence the particular levelled prisoner has committed. Level #1 is the minimum security level, level #2 is medium level security, level #3 is close level security, level #4 is the maximum security zone, and level #5 is the administrative maximum security zone. However, Lorain Correctional Institute does not house any level #5 prisoner yet.

Department of corrections do live up to the God given civil rights of even the worst of the criminals. The inmate look up is the correctional institute’s responsibility. The inmates are trained in constructive and educational programs which help them to get back to mainstream life and community.

  • The inmates who are serving a short term punishment period of 90days or less are guided with assignments to prepare themselves for a law abiding life and other important workshops for job readiness and addiction education. This program is called “short term offender program”.
  • Another program, sponsored by the Centre for Families & Children, called “returning home” is also scheduled for the offenders. The program not only prepares them to get back and live a proper family life. This program gives out small household works to do to the offenders, like preparing meals, and provide the offenders a foster family to interact with so that they get into the family like environment.

There are other unique programs named “academic programs”, “career-technical programs”, “advanced job training”, “apprenticeship”, “library services”, “professional development”, “transitional educational program”, “distance learning”, “community education”, “education intensive program prison”, “comprehensive adult student assessment system”. Visiting The Offenders

The offenders are allowed for the visitors from Monday – Friday. The timings are usually 8am – 11am in the morning session and 12pm – 3pm in the afternoon session. The visiting hours can be changed by the institution authority and no prior notice is required to set out, so it is better to call up the institution for the visiting hour details while planning for a visit. The short term inmates are also allowed to the visitors. Visitors are also allowed on weekends and other public holidays apart from Christmas day and New Year’s Day.

Four visitors are allowed to each prisoner at a time, even children would be counted as separate heads.

The inmates are given choice to be picked up by someone or even the institution authorities drop the released inmates at the nearest bus station or main road from where they would get transports. The released inmates should be picked up within 12.30pm – 1.30pm on weekdays and on weekends they should be picked up within 8am – 10am. The releasing times can change without any prior notice. It would be better to call up the institution and check with the timing.

Services By Lorain Correctional Institution

Lorain Correctional Institution provides many community services and even trains the inmates in them so as to make them eligible enough to join the services later. The program is accredited to the non-profit organizations and serves the schools and other organizations which cannot afford all the things.

The programs also include training abandoned and stray dogs and prepare them well enough to be adopted. The institution also provides training to the pilot dogs to the visually impaired people as a guide.

Lorain Correctional Institution also provides services to the victims of crime. The victims are being enrolled to counselling, legal helps, advocacy, and even dealing with the offender in question.
