The Lockington Locks are the most amazing structure that still exists on the Miami & the Erie canal. They remain mostly in their original condition, recalling the past days of a flourishing Ohio when canals were in great use. The Lockington Locks is among the best-maintained structures on this canal. Opened in 1845, the main purpose of the Lockington Locks was to facilitate navigation. It also served as a connection between Cincinnati & the Ohio River & the River Toledo & Lake Erie. This canal served as a valuable mode of transportation to Ohio & was its source of water. However, the emergence the railroads rendered it useless.

The lockmaster’s house has now become a private residence. The original dry-dock basin where boats were brought in repair, is visible even today. What remains are the five lock steps leading down to Loramie Creek with abutments for the aqueduct. For further details, you can mail at
