SERPENT MOUND

Serpent Mound, Ohio

Serpent Mound, Ohio

Located atop the Bush Creek Valley, the Serpent Mound spreads over a quarter of a mile. It is the largest & the finest serpent effigy in the United States of America. A Harvard University archeologist Frederic Ward Putnam excavated the Serpent Mound in the in the later half of the nineteenth century. It was he who attributed the credit of having constructed this to the builders of two nearby mounds as well.

Recent excavation further reveals that the Serpent Mound could be made of wood Charcoal, that is, dated radiocarbon. Different tests showed this wood charcoal to date back to the culture of the Fort Ancients. Recent evidences however, link the builders of this mound to the creators of the elliptical mound rather than the burial mounds. While the head of the mound may be linked to summer solstice, the coils may point to winter solstice. The Serpent Mound is shrouded in mystery. It has become a public park for more than hundred years, attracting many visitors every year. You can get all the general information regarding this park mailing your queries at :
