In 1813, this fort was increased to almost double its size under the command of Capt. Daniel Hosbrook. Grant Boyhood Home
Written by admin on August 14, 2008 – 9:14 am -
Home to the eighteenth President of the United States of America, Ulysses S Grant, from 1823 to 1839, the Grant Boyhood Home is located in Georgetown. Jesse Grant & Hanna Grant, the parents of the President, built the original two-storey brick section when they moved to Georgetown in 1823. A year later, the kitchen was added & after five years, the two-storey structure was added to the original building.
This area recalls the childhood story of Ulysses, when he attended school in Georgetown, worked at his father’s tannery & also attended to horses. It was in 1977 that a couple from Georgetown bought this house in order to maintain it. Thus, it was remodeled & restored. One room in the house is dedicated to Grant & all the memorable items of Georgetown. This site has been declared to be a National Historic Landmark & put on National Register since 1982. However, it was only in 1996 that the site was thrown open to the visitors.
